This past Saturday RMHS students participated in COASTSWEEP 2012
This Saturday, the 22nd, 16 people helped cleanup both Front and Back Beaches in Rockport. Environmental Action Team members, students, parents, teachers, and some random passersby aided in the cleanup. One couple from Colorado involved their active young children in picking up all sorts of things on the beach! These popular tourist spots were filled with trash, namely cigarettes, food wrappers, and small plastic pieces likely washing up from boats. In total we collected 60 lbs. of trash and managed to separate some recyclables out as well. In just two hours we were able to clean the two main beaches of downtown Rockport. The overall statistics pertaining to the amount of particular items will be sent to The Urban Harbors Institute of UMass Boston and will be compiled into a collective piece of data, possibly providing information about regional epidemics of certain litter. Coastsweep is a locally coordinated event in which a person or group interested in planning a Coastsweep event in their area contacts the headquarters and is provided with all the necessary tools and data cards. Our RMHS Coastsweep Coordinator is Senior Renee Waller.
Thank you to Renee and the entire Coastsweep Team!!!
