Herren addresses Rockport students on dangers of drug addiction

Former NBA basketball player Chris Herren spoke to students at Rockport High School and Middle School Tuesday.
Herren, a high school basketball legend from Fall River, Massachusetts, realized his dreams by playing for the Celtics in the NBA, only to lose it all to addiction. Drug-free and alcohol-free since August 1, 2008, Herren has refocused his life to put sobriety and family above all else.
Herren shares his story with audiences in the hopes of reaching just one person and making a difference in their life. With the release of his memoir, Basketball Junkie, in May of 2011, Herren was approached by hundreds of people and their families looking for assistance in their road to recovery. Inspired by their stories, he formed The Herren Project to educate students and adults about addiction and to help others in taking the first steps toward recovery and a life of sobriety.
Herren delivered this very powerful message to Rockport 8-12th graders on Tuesday showing excerpts from the ESPN Film documentary “Unguarded” which shares Herren’s professional and personal story from high school through his pro career. He also touched on topics such as drunk driving, abusing drugs, peer pressure and bullying.
